Spring has sprung!

What a fantastic few weeks we have had in Canute.  The children have been working so hard on their learning.

World Book Day was a fantastic day as usual, with the children fully embracing the day.  We had a whole host of costumes on show and we enjoyed a day of fun.  As a part of the day Canute opened their class library!  The children decorated some beautiful bags to use to transport their books to and from school, made covers for their own reading logs and chose a first library book to take home.  The children can exchange their library books on any day of the week, we have a lovely selection and we are awaiting some more.  We finished our day with some buddy reading with Tregeagle who also taught us a poem and made us beautiful bookmarks.  We have also been lucky enough to have a visit from the Library Service who shared the wonderful story of 'Owl Babies' with us.

In English we have been looking at the structure of a non-chronological report and the children have begun to plan their own reports on spring animals.

There has been a lot of measuring in maths over the past weeks in Reception and Year 2 and the children have been comparing and measuring length using different units of measure including cubes, cm and m.  In Year 1 the children have been exploring the place value of numbers 20-50.

In our RE work we have been learning about why Easter is special to Christian people, exploring the stories behind the events of Holy week and sharing these in different forms including role play and art activities.

In PSHE the children have been thinking about what it means to be healthy in regards to diet, sleep, exercise and medicine.

We have been so lucky to have Miss Northcott working with us over the past 7 weeks and unfortunately this week will be her last and she will be back to university.  We wish her all the luck in the rest of her teaching journey.

Hello Everyone!

This week Penhallow have enjoyed a dinosaur themed music lesson, where they were able to use a range of percussion instruments to make different accompaniments to a song.

In Geography, we learnt about the location of the 4 countries of the British Isles and found out some of the key characteristics of these countries. 

In our science lesson this week, we learnt about which animals are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We looked at the different types of teeth that these animals have, and compared them with our own teeth. 

During our RE lesson, we found out about Palm Sunday, made some palm leaves and learnt a song with actions, which Year 1 taught to Reception.

Our English lessons this week, have been focused on Quentin Blake’s story of Mrs Armitage on Wheels. We really enjoyed the story and the characters. So far, we have labelled Mrs Armitage’s bike, and drawn a story map to explain what happened in the story.

Exciting news in Landaviddy class - our beans are sprouting! This week, we have continued observing our 'beans in a bag'. We have seen the first signs of our plants germinating and growing roots. We can't wait to see how they continue to change. 

In Art, we have explored mixing primary colours to make secondary colours, using watercolour paints. This was lots of fun! 

Year 3 have finishing their length and perimeter unit this week and have already started work on Fractions. Year 2 have continued to explore multiplication and division, by exploring the link between these operations too. 

In English, we have been writing up our own versions of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have had some fantastic ideas and innovations taking place with our characters climbing up sunflowers, strawberry stalks and even palm trees! We will finish off our writing next week and begin to finalise our neat copies. 

Congratulations to Amber, Alfie and Charlie-Ray for being chosen as Landaviddy's People of the Week. And a big well done to Lowen J and Rosie for achieving their 99 club badges this week.

Congratulations to our First Lego League Competitors

On Wednesday 12th March, Sam Watts took the Lego team to RNAS Culdrose to compete, with their Lego robot, against 60 other schools. They also had to complete a presentation on innovative ways to explore the oceans. The team of Rioch, Lexi, Caleb, Talan, Connor, Holly, Emmy, Poppy and Olivia did amazingly well, winning the judges award for their enthusiasm, motivation and all round positivity. Congratulations to the team and thanks to Sam for all his hard work preparing the children so well. Thank you also to Karen Brinson for helping out on the day.

Despite the cold weather, we have enjoyed some sunny days which has enabled us to take our curriculum outside more often. As part of their geography, learning about the seasons, Year 1 and 2 children went in search of signs of spring and captured this on their spring sticks.

Thank you to all those parents/carers who helped dress their children up for our World Book Day celebrations. We had some amazing outfits representing book characters and, looking around the school today,  I think the hair dye and face pant has finally worn off!

Music Instrument Lessons

Creative Chaipelers!

We have had a very creative week in Chaipel Class.

Sean Hewitt has begun a series of art lessons linking to our work on the Orwell project. We began this week by looking at foreground and backgrouond, combining photographs with our own sketches. 

In DT, we have been looking into a range of sewing techniques. We spent an afternoon practising how to tack, sew running and whip stitch as well as learn the basics of threading and knotting. It was slow and steady but we are already making progress. Over the next few weeks, we will learn how to add appliques, sew buttons and use back stitch to sew an initial.

ENGLISH
Our draft copy of our Tusor diaries have been writtten and next week, we will be editing, improving and creating our best copies. We have worked hard and have combined our knowledge of the life and times of Anne Boleyn with the use of colloquial language and the subjunctive form.

MATHS
Y6 have learnt about percentages and are very confident whilst the Y5s have been identifying equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.

Our Music lesson had us creating rhythm using a range of instruments and PE focused on progressing our skills at rounders.

CONGRATULATIONS to Dominic for achieving his next 99 Club and to our People of the Week - Lily and Kora - for demonstrating our school values.

What an amazing science week we've had in Tregantle! Our focus has been of floating and sinking and looking at how we can help to keep our planet clean. The children have been amazing at experimenting and talking about their ideas. We also had some great designs for our competition to design something to help clear the plastic from the ocean. We even had a prize winner which was fantastic! We certainly have some budding scientists in Tregantle class!  

The children were eager to take up books to share at St Anne's this week.

We took a selection of favourite traditional tales, and some newer books that we hadn't read before.

The Grannies loved sharing the stories with the children and they loved it, too.



 

TALLAND'S BLOG 14.3.25

We hope you have all had a lovely week. It's been all go here! Starting with bongos for music! It was lots of fun and the children were fantastic at arranging how soft or hard to tap their instrument.  We then had an art extraordinaire in to help us with the Orwell Project. The art work that came out of the afternoon was simply brilliant. Talland worked so hard and were so respectful!

Maths
Year 4 have been adding fractions and finding equivalent fractions with the help of  a fraction wall.
Year 5 have been turning fractions into decimals and vice versa. They have also been looking at tenths, hundredths and thousandths.

Writing
Talland have created some fabulous writing this week through the use of similes, personification and different sentence starters. They are now planning their diary entry from a soldiers point of view during the battles of 1066. I'm looking forward to them writing it up independently next week.

RE
We've stepped into the the holy week and are discovering what the three big days are during the holy week running up to Easter Sunday. We've spoken about why we call the day of Jesus' crucifixion 'Good Friday' and why Christians believe Jesus is our salvation.  

Computing
Talland took a trip to Mars to learn about the Mars Rover, Curiosity. We learnt about its journey to Mars and what it does on Mars. Jamie and Joey were even able to guess the cost of this project (£2,000,000,000). 

CONGRATULATIONS to Grace for earning her next badge in 99 club and WELL DONE to Heidi for being noticed for her determination and excellent behaviour in school.

Another busy week at Polperro School has flown past. In Monday’s music lessons, the children tried their hand at African drumming, exploring rhythm, teamwork, and cultural diversity through the rich traditions of African music. Later in the week, local artist Sean Hewitt worked with years 4-6 to produce amazing pieces of artwork depicting George Orwell and Polperro as part of the Polperro Orwell Project.

Emergency Lockdown Procedure
We held an emergency lockdown procedure drill today and the children responded very well. Lockdown procedures are important and would be used in response to an internal or external incident which could be a threat to the safety of staff and children in the school such as: 1. A reported incident, disturbance in the local community 2. An intruder on the site 3. A warning being received regarding a local risk of air pollution (smoke plume, gas cloud etc.) 4. A major fire in the vicinity of the school 5. The close proximity of a dangerous dog. We practise this drill yearly and fire drills termly.

FOPS Easter Discos
Easter Discos for the children on Thursday, 3rd April. we will be holding Easter school discos on Thursday 3rd April. Tickets are on sale in the office and cost £3. The disco for Reception, Year 1 and year 2 will be from 3:15-4:15pm. Pupils should bring a change of clothes and will be able to change after school. KS2 (years 3-6) children should go home at the usual time of 3:15pm and then return to school for their disco which will be from 4:30-6:00pm. Please find attached a poster for this event.

Comic Relief
Red Nose Day is next Friday, 21st March. The School Council would like the children to come to school in MUFTI (bright colours/funky clothes!) with a minimum donation of £1 for this MUFTI day. We will be selling Red noses for £2 from Monday.

We have continued exploring farms this week and have been talking about what happens on the farm, foods that we can grow and what the role of a farmer is.
The children have created pictures in paint to represent farmers fields and have been printing with cauliflower and broccoli to show the vegetables been grown. They have made corn on the cob using their handprints and  have made life cycles of a chicken.
They have explored the farm themed tuft tray with intetest.

At story time we have enjoyed the story of "Oliver's vegetables", the children have really enjoyed this story and they have had the opportunity to talk about vegetables that they have tried and discussed which ones they like and dislike.
In phonics the children have been joining in actions to familiar and new songs, breaking words down into their different beats and identifying animals from their sounds.

In maths the children have been recognising numbers and ordering them. They have been finding different objects to represent the numbers 1-3 and beyond.

The Nursery Team 

This week, we have been treated to some wonderful weather and Team Brunel have made the most of the sunshine. In addition to the wonderful learning that the children have been experiencing in school, we have also had residentials to Dartmoor, a Songfest concert and many other exciting events that you can share with us in our Brunel Bulletin. Have a wonderful weekend. 

Shrove Tuesday
Our children had the opportunity to make their pancakes in the afternoon to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Our children love cooking so this was the perfect chance to get in the kitchen and work as a team to make some tasty pancakes.


St Piran's Day
This day was very special because we had a special surprise arrive at school. Looe Shedders have been working to create the school a tractor to have on the playground. They assembled the tractor on St Piran's Day and children were able to see the wonderful creation. A huge thank-you to Looe Shedders for the time and effort which went into making this and also our PTFA who donated money towards the resources. Whilst the tractor was being built, Cardinham class were busy baking scones and we then began our celebrations of St Piran's by having a cream tea with all of our visitors outside in the sunshine. We continued the day doing a range of Cornish activities including our own flag kits and oreinteering with Cornish questions.

World Book Day
We got all comfy this year with the children wearing their PJs. Each class had a picture book which they then took part in a range of activities linking to that book. Kilminorth class had 'Aliens in Underpants save the world' so made their own underpants learning the basics of sewing and then made their own alien headpiece. Cardinham class produced lovely artwork and writing on the book Island.

Emergency First Aid - The Recovery Position

The children have had so much fun learning how to place a casualty in to the recovery position. They all remembered the emergency ABC (airway, breathing and circulation) procedure prior to putting the casualty in a safe recovery position. Well done, Talland Class.


Maths
The children are becoming proficient experts in mathematical problem solving. They can confidently apply their knowledge of adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying fractions to solve simple one step and two step problems. 


English
We have some natural poets in Talland Class who intuitively use figurative language to enhance the verses within their poems. Most children are able to competently use metaphors, personification and alliteration effectively to enhance the poems they have written. Some children were able to recognise and include rhythm to allow their poems to flow when being read. Keep up the good work, Talland Class.

This week we have covered a wide range of exciting subjects and learned many new things. In art, we explored the life and work of the artist Dora Carrington, studying her unique style and the influence she had on the world of art.

In cricket, we focused on both batting and bowling techniques, learning how to improve our skills and understanding the strategies behind the game.

In science, we studied seasonal changes and how the weather can vary throughout the year. We also had the opportunity to create our own wind socks, helping us to observe wind direction and speed in a hands-on way. During PSHE lessons, we explored the importance of healthy eating and how the right foods can help our bodies stay strong and energised.

In music, we practiced singing, learning new songs and developing our vocal skills. In maths, we delved into place value, focusing on numbers up to 50, which helped us to strengthen our understanding of number patterns and how to compare and order numbers accurately. In English, we worked on using adjectives to describe the desert, learning how to create vivid and detailed descriptions that painted pictures with words.

Finally, in geography, we studied the nomadic cultures of Mongolia, learning about their lifestyle, traditions, and the challenges they face in such a unique environment.
