We have been busy in Heligan class! This week we have been continuing our science topic of Everyday Materials. We have been exploring materials that are natural and those that are man-made. We have also been looking at different objects and identifying the material that they are made from.
In Art, we have been exploring the art work of Alma Thomas. This week we have been thinking about how to keep our colours bright, and how to control paint to make our pictures stand out. We have created some wonderful pictures.
In outdoor learning, we have made our own bears out of conkers and leaves with Mrs Gregory. We loved doing this activity and finding as many leaves as we could for the bear’s body. We then finished with some fun games using the parachute!
We also had our Harvest Festival assembly this week where we showed our parents and carers the songs we have been learning and acted out the story of the Little Red Hen. We collected lots of food for the food bank too!
Well done Heligan class, another great week.
We’ve been busy in Heligan class this week!
We have started our new scheme: Mastering Number, which helps the children to recognise numbers and to help them remember key number facts. We have been focusing on subitising this week and different numbers we can use to make 5. The children have begun recognising the numbers without needing to count and can also explain how they make 5. We are looking forward to how this helps with their maths learning throughout the year.
We have also been to our outdoor learning session with Mrs Gregory. This time, we made fairy wands and used them to blow bubbles. We found sticks outside and used wool to create different colours and make different patterns. We were then using our fairy wands during our role play in provision time.
We have been working lots and lots on our number formation, as this is a goal for all Year 1. We have done this through writing in the air, practising our numbers on whiteboards and practising forming the number on a peg board. We are going to keep working on our numbers until we are super confident writing them down.
We have also been busy practising our Harvest Festival songs for our Harvest Assembly next week. This is at 10am on Tuesday 6th October if any parents would like to come along. We have been working so hard on our singing so it will be lovely to share it with our adults!
Well done Heligan class, another fantastic week.
We’ve had a great third week back at school for Heligan class.
This week, we have started our handwriting each day. We do this through warming up our fingers by line tracing with music. We then have been practising forming the letters in the air, and then writing them down. We’ve been working really hard on our letter formation and it shows in our writing!
In PE, we have started our Hockey lessons. This week we focused on how to hold the hockey stick and how to control the ball. We did this through small taps, making sure we had two hands on the stick and we were keeping the ball close to us. We then played a few games to practise these skills. We have loved Hockey and have said how much we’re looking forward to working on it again next week.
In English, we have been learning about nouns and verbs. We have consolidated our learning of common and proper nouns and we keep practising this in the classroom, finding common nouns and finding proper nouns. We have now begun looking at verbs and have done some sentence building using verbs. We played ‘spot the missing verb’ in different sentences.
We have also been focusing on numerals as words in Maths. We had to find the word to match the number!
We’ve had a great week.
Well done Heligan class.
We’ve had a great second week in Heligan class.
This week we have been looking at ‘Jeans for Genes day’ and we have all come to school on Friday in our jeans to raise money for this cause. We explored this in outdoor learning by making our own jeans out of natural materials. We gathered all the materials we needed and worked as a team to make our jeans.
In maths, we have been representing objects on a ten frame. We were given an amount and then we had to show that number on our ten frame. We have also begun our counting in 2s, 5s and 10s at the start of our maths lessons which we are really enjoying! Next week we will start our Mastering Number unit which helps children with their quick recall of number facts.
Our science unit this half term is focusing on everyday materials. We have explored different materials such as wood, plastic, fabric and metal. We have then talked about the properties of these materials by saying what they feel like.
Well done Heligan class, another great week!
We have had a wonderful first week back in Year 1! The children have been introduced to our new class name - Heligan class. We have explored where Heligan is and talked about what you might see there.
We've also been working as mathematicians! We've been using different resources, lots of counting and sorting different objects into groups. Each half term we will have a big question that we focus our wider curriculum work around. This half term our big question is: How was school different in the Victorian times? So, in History we will be learning about schools in the past and comparing them to now. We have lots of lovely learning to look forward to and the children have settled in just wonderfully.
Just a few reminders / updates:
PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please make sure children come to school in correct PE kit on these days.
Please send your child in with a water bottle and coat each day.
Please order lunches on a Thursday for the following week if your child has a school lunch.
We will be changing books on a Friday. Please send your child in with their book and reading record on this day.
Thank you for all your support so far - we are in for a good year!
