We have been learning all about the difference between sweet chestnuts and horse chestnuts! We found out that you can eat some chestnuts but not others.

We explored the texture of the conkers, how smooth and shiny they are and how the outer shell is spikey, but soft and velvety inside. We explored the colour and shape of the conkers.

We made conker people from natural resources; they were so much fun to create! We used a tray of paint to roll the conkers around and create beautiful artwork.

We celebrated Harvest Festival along with the rest of the school! We sang Dingle Dangle Scarecrow and even joined in with some of the catchy songs that the older children performed!
This week in Pendennis class we have been exploring colours using rainbow filters, messy water play and coloured carpet tiles. We are able to identify colours, and we are learning to spot patterns. The coloured water play also helps us with our hand eye coordination and our motor skills with pouring, as well as our maths too!
In our This is Me topic, children have been using letters of all shapes and varieties to spot letters in our names. Some of us are able to put those letters together to build our name. We have also been playing board games together which builds on our social skills, helping us to wait and take turns as well as building our vocabulary.
Our second week back at school has been a very busy one. We have been following our topic of This is Me by creating faces from natural resources and salt dough, making collage versions of ourselves and learning the song Heads, Shoulders Knees and Toes!
We have also introduced our new Talking Tots Toolkit which is created by the Cornwall Council Early Years Speech and Language Team and aimed at getting two- and three-year-olds to build on their language skills. This week's circle time activity was "what's in the bag?" we each in turn have to pull an object from the bag and talk about what we see. We are having lots of fun, and the children look forward to this activity every day.
So far, the term has got off to a fantastic start, and our children are keen to learn, they are picking up on routines and are developing positive friendships.
This year, as our school has chosen to adopt Cornish place names, nursery will be known as Pendennis Class.
We have had a wonderful start to the term and have welcomed new children and returning children with lots of exciting ideas and plans for the weeks ahead. Autumn is always a lovely term and with all the changing seasonal colours and festivities, there is always something fun going on!
Our topic is "This Is Me" and we will be exploring what makes us, us! We will be comparing our families, hobbies, homes and environments and have asked families to send in family photos for our display.
Staff have been undertaking some interesting professional development around speech and language in the early years through Cornwall Council Together for Families. There will be more to come on this subject as we hope to hold some future parent and carer sessions.
In addition, we are happy to announce that we are undergoing the Maths Champion Programme which encourages a love of all things mathematical in early childhood. We are looking forward to implementing these ideas into the nursery day.
Our forest school continues to run this year on a Friday, and we are delighted to have the wonderful Mrs Gregory leading our sessions this term. We began this week with a lovely story called Bibble Bubble, and we made self-portraits from natural resources.
We will continue to visit Hillcrest Nursing Home on alternative Mondays, and our PE day will be Wednesday. Unfortunately, we no longer have coach Ryan this year, but Mrs Hilton and Mrs Owen will be running a sport session of our own.
A big thankyou to all of our fabulous families as we settle back into nursery life, we value your support greatly to make each day a happy, positive and enriching experience for your child.
